Managing Risks with Policies
Mobile Policy has to state both what and how you want people to use the device and the software. That is… what’s mandatory, what’s an option. Your staff need to be educated about mobile predatory behaviours and be able to recognise them. Some of the more obvious risks are taking photos and videos that remain on the device and are not deleted.
However the starting point is having a password and locking your phone when not in use.
Some things to consider in your policy are:
What can they, and what can’t they, take photos of in the course of their work?
What can they share from their device?
How many of the social media tools can they access on work devices for example
For businesses in the Health environment, this is a particular concern. Anything with information that allows a person and their data to be easily identified, is a blatant breach of trust.
Free for All
For many people, using a mobile device started life as a personal experience. So like any individual activity, everyone sets their own guidelines. They may or may not observe basic risk prevention practies, or simply sign up to everything that comes in from anywhere that has their name on it.
It is interesting to note the difference between company PC Usage guidelines and Mobile Usage Guidelines. Most organisations do not allow an employee to load anything they like onto their PC and/or to download a new version whenever. But in the mobile environment we have observed that it’s pretty much a” free for all”.
This is a dangerous connected 247 world. Most people appreciate some rules for navigating this environment. Your Company Policy document should give them guidance and sometimes Rules. Discretion is hard because what some people think is risky, others think is okay. My advise, start tough, and lighten up later.
